After seeing your presentation, I was very interested in the idea of “faction”, of using factual information with fiction details and I wondered if this was a technique that is utilized in my novel as well. My novel, Cold Mountain, took place during the Civil War and included many facts regarding the actual battles and how the soldiers experienced them. The use of these real facts does “give weight to horrific events, depicting such scenes with extensively, painstaking detail,” (Sinchek). The real facts make the scene, as previously stated, all that more real. It deeply ingrains in the reader that these are events and details that actually happened. No one made them up. I could see it in Shindler’s List especially shown in the details about the gruesome holocaust scenes. These details “…are necessary to mention for the sake of the story,” (Sinchek) and give it weight and significance where it otherwise would have held little importance. If the details were not present, the story would still be gruesome and horrific but it would not be real and the reader would have been left with little but a passing sorrowful feeling. These details make the reader actually think and recognize that it is not made up which makes the story that much more encapsulating.
